DJ Becker/The Madera News September 11th, 2023

A Madera man in his late 60’s was struck by two vehicles on Madera Avenue at Maple Street Monday evening about 8:15, according to The Madera Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had just left the nearby market and was crossing from west to east when he was struck by southbound traffic. His shoes, hat, glasses and other belongings lay scattered over a 100-yard stretch of street. Skid marks of about 60 feet were present at the scene. The release of his name is pending notification of next of kin.

Madera Police Department Lt. Cmdr. Gino Chiramonte said the man was wearing dark clothing and was crossing four lanes of moving traffic in the mid-block which was not considered safe. “We always recommend pedestrians use marked crosswalks for this reason. This man walked out in front of and was struck and clipped by one motorist who could not avoid him. And then ended up in front of and being hit by another moving vehicle. Both drivers stopped, called 911, and are cooperating with the investigation.” Chiramonte said. A large no-pedestrian crossing sign is present at the corner of Madera Avenue and Maple Street near the scene of the fatality.
